Worst Words 2023: competition terms and conditions

As at 20 November 2023

Every year we collect the worst examples of buzzwords, jargon, doublespeak and corporate spin. By doing this, we aim to show how public language can be improved. We encourage everyone to adopt a plainer style of talking.

We’re celebrating this year’s shortlist with a competition where the winner receives:

  • a free place in one of our most popular and highly rated plain languages workshops
  • a copy of Writing at Work.

The free place is valid for a workshop up to 90 days after we notify you.

How to enter

Vote for your favourite entry in our people’s choice shortlist and you will automatically be entered into the draw.

Anyone meeting all the following criteria can enter:

  • must have a valid email address
  • must be over 18
  • must not by employed by Plain English Foundation or any EdventureCo subsidiary.

The competition runs from 21 November 2023 to 5 December 2023 and is limited to 1 entry per person.

If we suspect that you have not followed these terms and conditions, we will disqualify your entry from the prize draw. For example, we will disqualify people who vote using multiple email addresses.

How we choose a winner

We will randomly select a winner on 6 December 2023, drawing from the people who voted for a Worst Words winner.

We use wheelofnames.com to draw the winner.

All our decisions are final.

If we draw your name, we will email you to confirm that you’ve won. We’ll do this by close of business on 7 December.

How to claim your prize

To claim your prize, please contact us to confirm your details. You can reply to our notification email or contact us on mail@plainenglishfoundation.com or 1300 691 885.

We’ll need your full name and email address to enrol you in your free workshop. The email address must be the same one you used to vote.

We’ll also need your mailing address to send you a copy of Writing at Work.

We don’t collect any other information about you. But we will store your name and email address in our newsletter and workshop databases. We will also use your full name to advertise the competition.

If you win but do not reply to our email after 90 days, you forfeit the prize. We can choose to redraw if the winner does not meet the competition terms and conditions.

If you have a dispute about entering this competition or claiming the prize, please email us at mail@plainenglishfoundation.com or call 1300 691 885.
